Fake News: Man Did NOT Sue Radio Station For Playing "Despacito" 800 Times A Day

  • by: Maarten Schenk

A satirical website named 8Shit posted an article titled: "Man Sues Radio Station For Playing "Despacito" 800 Times A Day". It opened:

Florida.- A man sued a radio station for playing "Despacito" way too many times in a single day. The man, who is a truck driver and has always been loyal to that radio station, decided that he was tired of listening to the same song over and over, and wanted to become a hero.

"At first it was a cool song. Even though I don't speak spanish, I liked the song. I used to listen to it every day with no problems", stated the man to our reporter Gary Cockburn. He kept going: "But then they started to repeat it way too much. It was like the only song they had to play, and it started to piss me off. It also pissed off my coworkers".

The article doesn't mention the man's name or the radio station, which is a first clue that the story is fake.

A second clue is that the song Despacito is 3 minutes and 47 seconds long (the video clip is even longer). Playing that 800 times in a row would take 2 days, 2 hours, 26 minutes and 40 seconds. And that is without taking a break for commercials, station identification or jabbering deejays. So it is physically impossible to play it 800 times a day.

The final clue is in the disclaimer on the 8shit website:

8Shit is a satire news and humor website. All its content is fiction (except those under the "serious" category) and shouldn't be taken as real. All references, names and marks or institutions in this web are used as contextual elements, like in any novel or science-fiction story.

Despite this hundreds of people are sharing the story anyway as you can see in the Trendolizer graph at the end of this article. If anyone you know got their hopes up about never hearing "Despacito" on the radio anymore, bash in their expectations by sending them to this article. Sorry!
