Fact Check

There is a trending NOT TRUE story stating that "George Zimmerman Paid $2 Million For Weapon Used In Shooting Death Of Trayvon Martin." The story comes from reknowned satire/hoax website Empire Herald, which states in their Terms of Service page this little nugget that is buried at the very bottom of the page:

A little excerpt from the NOT TRUE story:

Zimmerman, now 32 years old, has now become a multi-millionaire after selling the Kel-Tec PF-9mm handgun he used to shoot and kill Trayvon Martin. The handgun was originally listed on GunBroker.com, on Thursday with an auction start time of 11 a.m. however the listing was removed within seconds. The weapon was posted for sale with a starting bid set at $5,000 with an undisclosed "reserve price" for the winner bidder to meet. Despite his listing being removed, a private gun collector from Georgia decided to contact Zimmerman personally to purchase the gun. Zimmerman was paid $2 Million for the handgun via a private broker in Miami.

The statement "Whether you are on the right side or wrong side of the incident that took place, it can not be denied that this is American history" comes up with no matches via google. You would think a statement on such a major issue would be reported by more than just one HOAX website. Plus, it is crazy to think it would sell for $2 million when the opening price was $5k.

George Zimmerman put himself back in the media spotlight recently by announcing that he would be auctioning off the gun he used to shoot and kill Trayvon Martin On the night of February 26, 2012. Earlier today the auction for the firearm mysteriously disappeared and was replaced with a graphic stating that the item was no longer in the system.900x171xScreen,P20Shot,P202016-05-12,P20at,P209.13.48,P20AM-thumb-900x171-907241.png.pagespeed.ic.bZxGrCi65t.png

Although we do not know the reason for the auction being removed this morning, Lead Stories thinks it's safe to say that this story is 100% NOT TRUE.
