Does a photo show a "captured" American in Iran wearing an authentic U.S. military uniform? No, that's not true: The image is AI-generated, and online detection tools indicate it is fake, including a SynthID watermark indicating it was created or edited using Google AI tools. There are no reliable reports of an American service member being taken captive by Iran.
The claim appeared in a post (archived here) by the @Gh___87s account on X on April 5, 2026. It read (translated from Arabic):
Breaking News | Iranian Revolutionary Guard
Officially announces the capture of a U.S. soldier, a pilot with the rank of captain, following the downing of her aircraft.
| Sources in Tehran now broadcasting initial images showing the detained soldier in a custody position immediately upon her arrival at the Central Operations Room.

Image analysis
Lead Stories ran the image through Gemini, Google's AI assistant (archived here). It reached these conclusions:
Based on a digital analysis, most or all of this image was generated or edited using Google's AI tools [SynthID watermark].
The image contains some visual inconsistencies that are often characteristic of AI generation.
The American flags (circled in yellow) on the sleeves of the uniform look especially out of place. They appear to have been pasted onto the image, not an actual part of it. Not only are the flags too large, but they also do not naturally follow the curvature of the arm.

The faces of the men also appear slightly blurred and lack natural detail compared to the rest of the scene.
Separately, the Hive Moderation AI-Generated Content Detection tool concluded the image was 99.1% "likely to be AI-generated":
