Was a man named Ethan Caldwell arrested after posing as a museum tour guide and inventing completely fake histories for every painting? No, that's not true: The story originated on an Instagram page known for posting parody stories. The story carries a disclaimer labeling the post as funny, comedy, satire and "for entertainment purposes only." There are no credible news reports of Ethan Caldwell being arrested for posing as a museum tour guide. An online detection tool rated the mugshot image used for the post as 99.9% likely AI-generated.

The claim appeared in a June 12, 2026, post on Instagram account @thedudehumorreport (archived here). It opened:

MAN ARRESTED AFTER POSING AS A MUSEUM TOUR GUIDE AND INVENTING COMPLETELY FAKE HISTORIES FOR EVERY PAINTING

The post shared details of the fake story, presenting itself as to be a real news report:

BOSTON, MA -- A man was arrested after allegedly spending three weekends posing as a museum tour guide and confidently making up elaborate stories for unsuspecting visitors.

Authorities say 34-year-old Ethan Caldwell purchased a lanyard online, wore a dark sweater, and simply began leading groups through the museum whenever actual tour guides were occupied.

The Dude Humor Report account on Instagram (archived here) is a satire site, with a profile image of The Dude from The Big Lebowski movie and a disclaimer that reads:

Official page of The Dude Humor Report ™ satire & parody stories that are exaggerated, developing fictional created for entertainment purposes only

The Hive Moderation AI-Generated Content Detection tool concluded that the mugshot image was 99.9% "likely to be AI-generated":

Despite the humor in the account name and a clear label in the caption, social media users were sharing the story without noting it was satire and with the Dude Humor logo removed, as seen here (archived here) and here (archived here).

Lead Stories searched Google News (archived here) and Yahoo News (archived here) and did not find any matching reports of an Ethan Caldwell being arrested for impersonating a museum tour guide and making up completely fake stories about the art.
