Fact Check: NO Evidence JD Vance Is Scheduled To Visit Pope Leo XIV After Surgery And Cancer Diagnosis No Such Plan

Is U.S. Vice President JD Vance scheduled to meet Pope Leo XIV after the pontiff's surgery, as of Oct. 16, 2026? No, that's not true: The story originated as a joke from a self-described satire account. Neither Vance's official accounts nor established news outlets carried any announcement of such a visit.

The claim initially appeared in a post (archived here) on X where it was published by @DailyNoud on Oct. 14, 2026. It read:

JD Vance is set to visit Pope Leo XIV following his recent surgery and lung cancer diagnosis.

This is what the composite image attached to the post looked like on X at the time of writing:

That account's self-description (archived here) read:

PARODY Hip-Hop News...

It continued:

These are fake stories.

The post reviewed in this fact check went live, as a major news story was unfolding in the Vatican.

On Oct. 13, 2026, U.S.-born Pope Leo XIV underwent a surgery (archived here) to have the lower lobe of his right lung removed following the discovery of a cancerous nodule.

In April 2025, Vance visited (archived here) his predecessor, Pope Francis, hours before his death (archived here) that was ruled to have occurred from natural causes.

As Lead Stories previously reported, the pontiff's death fueled conspiracies and memes. For example, Lead Stories wrote about a fake video of Vance talking about the meeting and a recording of a comedian playing the VP's sister asking the internet to stop saying he killed Pope Francis.

Following the announcement of Pope Leo XIV's diagnosis, Vance wrote (archived here) on X that his "family continues to pray for the good health and full recovery" of the pontiff.

Lead Stories manually checked his official VP account on the same platform (archived here) and the account of his press secretary, Taylor van Kirk (archived here), but those pages showed no announcement of the supposed trip.

As of publication, a broad search on Google News for the keywords seen here (archived here) did not show any reporting from established news organizations confirming the rumor that is the focus of this fact check.

Lead Stories reached out to the White House for additional comments. If we receive a response, this story will be updated as appropriate.
