Did U.S. President Donald Trump offer Canada an "associate membership" in the U.S. in the early hours of Nov. 3, 2026, while posting on Truth Social? No, that's not true: The post attributed to him on social media didn't match anything published by his profile that day. As of Nov. 4, 2026, no established media organization reported that such a post had ever existed.
The claim appeared in a post (archived here and here) on X where it was published by @Martyupnorth on Nov. 3, 2026. It opened:
He should have done this all along. It's not too late.
The text in the attached image that resembled a screenshot of a Trump post on TruthSocial read:
Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
I WANT TO OFFER MARK CARNEY AND CANADIANS AN ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THANK YOU FOR YOU [sic] ATTENTION TO THIS IMPORTANT MATTER!!! PRESIDENT DJT.

This is what that picture looked like on X at the time of writing:

One thing that cast doubt on the authenticity of the "screenshot" was the presence of the barely seen watermark that mentioned the name of the account that made the claim reviewed in this fact check:

Lead Stories manually scrolled through the posts on Trump's account (archived here) published between 08:05 PM on Nov. 2, 2026 (archived here) and 11:52 PM Nov. 3, 2026 (archived here), which covers the period of the supposed offer, but found nothing remotely similar.
Then, Lead Stories performed an automatic search, which showed no matches, either:

When Lead Stories carried out an additional textual search across the Trump account on that social platform via Google for the keywords seen here (archived here), it returned no results:

A search across Trump's Truth, the archive of Trump posts on Truth Social (archived here) didn't show any confirmation that the post in question had ever been posted:

Had the president of the U.S. publicly made such an offer to Canada, that would almost certainly generate media coverage. However, a search across Google News for the keywords seen here (archived here) didn't show any news reports from established journalistic organizations corroborating the fact of the post's publication.
Earlier, on Oct. 30, 2026, Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed (archived here) that his country was working with the European Union to become the first EU's associate member.
