Fake News: There Is NOT A Great Possibility That A Big Asteroid Will Hit The Earth In September 2019

Is there is a great possibility that a big asteroid will hit the Earth in September 2019? No, that's not true: It is a click bait claim that distorts a real announcement by the European Space Agency about an astroid that will pass relatively near the planet, but does not pose a significant threat.

The story originated from an article published on June 24, 2019 titled "There is a Great Possibility That a Big Asteroid will hit the Earth in September 2019" (archived here) which opened:

The European Space Agency has recently made a disturbing announcement. It looks like a huge asteroid could hit Earth on September 9, 2019.
The asteroid was first discovered in 2006. At that time, the giant asteroid was around the Sun. It seems that now, in 2019, this asteroid is the greatest threat to humanity.

At that time, the giant asteroid was around the Sun. It seems that now, in 2019, this asteroid is the greatest threat to humanity. However,...

This is a false alarm. The real chances that this astroid will hit our planetary home are small, according to the latest reporting by London's Metro:

And the smart space folk say there's only around a 1-in-7000 chance that the massive chunk of rock will collide with us. Asteroid 2006 QV89 measures 40 meters in diameter and it'll almost certainly fly harmlessly past at a distance of 4.2 million miles away on September 9.

If you want to see the tracking of this astroid by NASA, click here. The ESA's "space situational awareness page, which includes a "risk list" of potential astroid threats, can be found here. We don't recommend the Alien Blog for information in life and death issues.
