Leonardo DiCaprio DID NOT Drop And Break Oscar Award After Speech

Fact Check

  • by: Jeremy Smith

Leo just won his first Oscar award after 25 years on the scene. It's time for accolades, not fake stories. Unfortunately, there is a story out there on the interwebs from a known hoax site stating "Leonardo DiCaprio Drops And Breaks His Best Actor Oscar Award While Leaving Academy Awards". Seems plausible, but simply NOT TRUE.

The story starts with:

Moments after winning his long awaited first Oscar award for Best Actor in the 88th annual Academy awards, It is being reported that Leonardo DiCaprio dropped and broke his precious Oscar award while leaving the Dolby Theater where the Oscars were being held.

Believable. Sure, you'd be overly excited after receiving your first Oscar:

Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the greatest actors of his time, has finally won an Oscar award. Leonardo won the Best Actor award for his role in the film 'The Revenant'. Upon winning, He gives a shout out to Tom Hardy, who grins from the crowd; director Alejandro Iñárritu; Michael Caton-Jones, the first director to cast him in a film; as well as the predictable ones, i.e. his team and his parents.

Yes, this did happen during the show, adding to the fast rising numbers for this NOT TRUE story.

According to reports, Leonardo DiCaprio was leaving the building with the award in his hand, when suddenly Leo decides to hold up the award to a nearby camera. Apparently Leo did not have a good grip on the award, and the momentum of him raising his arm caused the golden statuette to go flying a few feet, breaking in cracking in 3 parts as it landed on the concrete floor. According to reports, Leo immediately got on his knees and began to cry.

The revealing part of this NOT TRUE story is when the author quotes the Academy President on the reason behind Leo DiCaprio not winning an Oscar in the past:

It is very unlikely that the Academy awards will send Leonardo a replacement, as a limited number statuettes are made for the awards. "And this is why he never won until today", Academy awards president Cheryl Boone Isaacs told reporters at the scene. Currently, Fellow actors and actresses have gathered to console Leonardo for his broken Oscar award.

A recent post to Leo's Twitter seems positive:
